What is Prevention Corps? How is it different from AmeriCorps?

Prevention Corps is an AmeriCorps program, which is a federally funded agency promoting national service and volunteerism.

Each AmeriCorps program  addresses a pressing issue facing our country, including food insecurity, disaster preparedness, learning in public schools, domestic violence, and more. Other programs affiliated with AmeriCorps include Teach for America and Habitat for Humanity.

Prevention Corps specifically tackles the opioid crisis here in Connecticut. In addition to other projects, we partner with nonprofit organizations across the state and train in the use of Naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdose emergencies.

What is Catalyst CT’s role with Prevention Corps?

As an AmeriCorps program, Prevention Corps is implemented at the state level by the Connecticut Commission on Community Service (CCCS), which provides funding to many local nonprofits. Catalyst CT receives funding for Prevention Corps to address the opioid crisis in CT.

Is being a Prevention Corps Member an internship?

It’s similar to an internship, but better! Prevention Corps offers mentoring, networking opportunities, and experience in a specific field, but it is a commitment to serve the community. Instead of being an employee or intern, participants become members of the Prevention Corps program. In addition to all the benefits of an internship, members receive a monthly cash stipend and an education award for tuition and student loans.

What will I do as a Prevention Corps member?

The tasks of a Prevention Corps member can vary depending on their host site. Members have led Naloxone trainings, conducted research, designed marketing materials, translated informational materials, and organized community events.

What are some of the organizations Prevention Corps members serve with?

Bridgeport Public Schools, The Alliance for Prevention and Wellness, Fairfield University Bellarmine Campus, Hamden Youth Services Bureau, Positive Directions, Amplify Inc, The McCall Center for Community Health, the Western Connecticut Coalition, and Norwalk Community College.

When are member applications due?

Applications for the 2024 –25 service term will be available in May 2024.

What are the membership requirements?

To serve, you must be at least 18 years old, graduated from high school or have your G.E.D., and be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or legal permanent resident alien. Most importantly, you should be excited to engage in your community and make a difference..

Do I have to be in college to serve with Prevention Corps?

Not at all! Some of our best members are retired, amid a career change, or simply wanting to give back to their community. Being a Prevention Corps member provides a great transition from college to a career, an opportunity to fill an internship requirement at a university, or a chance to explore your passion.

How much does this role pay?

AmeriCorps offers a modest cash stipend and an education award depending on your service hours.

If you commit to serving full-time (1,200 hours total, or 35 hours/week for 10 months), your stipend will be $18,000, and your education award will be $5,176.50, to be used for tuition or student loans.

For those who serve part-time (900 hours total, or 23 hours/week for 10 months), your stipend will be $8,000, and your education award will be $3,697.50, to be used for tuition or student loans.

Do you have an option if I can serve on nights and weekends only?

Unfortunately, our program requires a larger commitment and does not fit with a separate, full-time job. However, if you are passionate about making a difference in the opioid crisis, we encourage you to become certified in the use of Naloxone.

Applicants are encouraged to download and read our Member Guide, which outlines the time requirements, stipend amounts, and the full interview/matching process.
